A miniature garden is magical. Tiny gardens (or fairy gardens) are loved around the world by all ages!
This year, we decided to try our first miniature garden, created for Duff the Fluff to explore!
Although our mom is an avid gardener (see our childhood garden here), we were… late bloomers (giggle).
To our mom’s delight, we got the gardening bug during COVID and haven’t looked back!
We have much to learn about gardening, therefore our miniature garden is a learning work in progress.
We made the miniature Adirondack chair and table from popsicle sticks (free template and details here).
As shown in the video below, the stone wall is made from egg crates. We are excited with how the tiny pond with waterfall turned out!

Check out our step-by-step process in the videos below.

Mini Garden Plants
We used plants that were available at our nearby garden centres.
Since it gets cold here (Canada!), we selected plants that can either survive some cold, can be brought in and thrive indoors, or that will be summer seasonal.
It was fun to wander the colorful aisles of garden centres, looking for plants that could work to create a mini world.
The spot we chose would be very sunny, so the garden needed plants that would tolerate (or thrive in) hot summer sun.

Here is a list of the plants
(Please note: The *asterisk = unsure of the exact variety as we misplaced the tags UGH)
The Blue Star Juniper (Juniperus squamata ‘Blue Star’)
Moss Stonecrop (Sedum acre)
‘Platt’s Black’ or Black Brass Buttons (Leptinella squalida)
Scotch Moss (Sagina Aurea)
Kidney Weed or Lawn leaf (Dichondra repens)
Lamb’s Ears (Stachys byzantina ‘Silver Carpet’
Dwarf Alberta Spruce (Picea glauca ‘Conica’)
‘Major’ Corsican Stonecrop (Sedum dasyphyllum*)
Greek basil (Ocimum basilicum var. minimum) Great for cooking!
Foxtail fern (Asparagus densiflorus)
Zebra haworthia (Haworthiopsis fasciata)
Kiwi Aeonium (Aeonium haworthii)
Living Stones (lithops)

Lessons Learned
Don’t lose the plant tags!
Plant closer together (our summer is short, so we are not very worried about overcrowding)
