This cute Scottie dog toy pattern is easy to sew in a few hours. Use scrap fabric, add some weight to the legs to make a doorstop, or sew a DIY dog toy for your puppy to play with. Our Scottie Duff loves his Scottie!

Parents
Your kids may need a little help with this one, depending on their skill level. It’s a good way to improve on the basics of sewing and STEM skills. But please note parental supervision is needed: sharp needles, pins, scissors, sewing machines, and irons pose potential dangers!
We will slowly add simpler sewing patterns for budding crafters.

Scottie Dog Toy Pattern: Supplies
- Fabric (sturdier material with minimal fraying)
- Thread (I prefer Gutermann sew-all-thread)
- Sewing needle (for machine or hand)
- Stuffing (old t-shirts, sheets, or polyester stuffing)
- Optional: fabric chalk/pens for marking. These remove-with-heat pens are fantastic or this easy wipe-off refillable chalk pen

SCOTTIE DOG TOY Pattern: Stuffing
I used 10oz heavy duck cotton canvas, extra-strong thread, and a denim sewing machine needle.
You can also use whatever you have around the house – old shirts, sheets, blankets…
The stuffing was entirely cut up from old sheets and t-shirts. I prefer this stuffing for three reasons:
- Natural materials
- Re-usable (Duff shreds his toys)
- Less likely to be inhaled or consumed than polyester stuffing
I also double-stitched the seams in hopes it would last a little longer…
Caution: never leave your dog unsupervised with a toy.
Scottie Dog Toy Doorstop
Fill some ziplock bags with sand, and put them in the feet before stuffing (make sure the ziplock is sealed well!)
Scottie Toy Pattern Overview: EASY
As shown on Duff the Fluff, our stop motion puppet on Instagram, this is a super easy version of the pattern.

INSTRUCTIONS
Print the pattern at your desired scale (you can reduce the size when printing).
Cut out the pattern pieces.
Match and tape the pages labeled A & A together along the indicated edges.
Note:
The yellow checkered dog shown in the photo was made using the pattern printed at 25% of the original size.
Fold the fabric right sides together.
Cut out A x 2 pieces
Sew them together right sides together.
Turn out, stuff with stuffing.
Slipstich the opening closed.
Scottie Toy Pattern Overview: MEDIUM

There are five pattern pieces: 2xA, 2xB, and 1xC.
In the instructions, they are labeled A.1, A.2, B.1, B.2 & C
B.1 and B.2 (gusset) are sewn together, then attached to the legs and underside of the A.1 and A.2 (body), matching the stars.
C is sewn to the head and neck of A.1 and A.2 (below)

Scottie Dogy Toy Pattern instructions

STEP 1
Download the free pattern template (in the resources, below)
Cut out the 5 pattern pieces (just a rough cut, doesn’t have to be perfect)
Tape the two pieces of “A” (the body) together where indicated. There are two square symbols, dashes, and ‘attach here’ to help.

Step 2
Tape the two pieces of “B” (the gusset) together where indicated. There are two triangle symbols, dashes and ‘attach here’ to help.

Step 3
Fold the fabric so the “right side” is on the inside. The right side means the “printed or pretty” surface of the fabric.
The photo shows fabric folded so that the bright red plaid “the right side” is on the inside, and the “wrong side” or fuzzy lighter part is on the outside.
TIP: This is a good sewing skill to learn since almost every sewing pattern will have these instructions. It’s important to follow the instructions or your pattern pieces will not fit together!

Step 4
With the fabric folded so the print is on the inside, pin pattern piece A in place.
Cut it out.
Note: Folding the fabric will give you two pieces of A.

Step 5
Repeat the same instructions as above for pattern piece B.

Step 6
Pin C on a single layer, “right side” of fabric up (like in the photo)

Step 7
Label all the pieces like this to make it easier for you and transfer any markings (the circles, stars etc)
Note: the markings are just guidelines for placement only, you don’t have to be exact in transferring the marking

Step 8
Seam: all the seams are to be sewn narrow, like in the photo.
This “seam allowance” is around 6mm or so.
If you prefer a larger seam allowance, you can increase the pattern size if desired.

Step 9
With “right sides” together, sew pattern pieces B.1 and B.2 together along the line shown, using a narrow hem.
It will look like this photo when it is done. Iron the seam flat if desired.

Step 10
Pin B.1 to the “right side” of pattern piece A.2, like in the photo.
Match the “star” on the pattern for B.1 and A.2 legs.
Sew them together in a narrow seam, ending each seam as marked by the green line in the photo.
You stop sewing when you hit the seam you stitched when sewing pieces B.1 and B.2 together (orange arrow)
It will look like this when done (bottom photo)

Step 11
Pin B.2 to the “right side” of A.1, as in the photo.
Match the “star” on the pattern for B.2 and A.1 legs.
Sew them together in a narrow seam, ending each seam as marked by the green line in the photo.
You stop sewing when you hit the seam you stitched when sewing pieces B.1 and B.2 together (orange arrow)
It will look like this when done (bottom photos)

Step 12
Pin one side of “C” to the “right side” of “A.1”
To help: match the circle on C to the Circle on A.1 nose and the happy face on C to the happy face on A.1 neck (approximate placement)
Sew them together in a narrow seam, pivoting where needed. It will look like the photo below when it is done.

Step 13
Pin the other side of “C” to the “right side” of “A.2” (red arrow)
And pin the head and body of A.1 and A.2 together, leaving open under the tail.
Sew together in a narrow seam, keeping the other ear (sewn together in Step 11) clear of the new seam. The finished seam will look like the photo below.

Step 14
Turn the Scottie inside out
TIP: use a pencil (blunt end, not the pointy one, or you could poke through the fabric)

Step 15
Scottie will be fully turned right side out.
Use the eraser end of a pencil to push put all ends.

Step 16
Stuff ’em using whatever method you are using.
Strips of sheets or shirts work best, cutting into smaller portions. You can push the pieces in with the blunt end of a pencil.

Step 17: finishing Scottie Dog Toy Pattern
Hand sew the opening up.
You can use an invisible slip stitch seam, or whatever stitch you prefer.
Not perfect, but done!
