If you have a kid who loves crafts, this is an inexpensive idea with many possibilities that can easily be adapted to different ages. There are free yarn doll and kid craft patterns and instructions below.
We had a blast making these when we were kids. Then we make some again recently and had even more fun!

We used this one because it’s a fun jumble of colors. So many color options are available.
One inexpensive ball made several creatures.
There is also a thicker yarn version, which would make nice pom-poms or creatures with thicker “fur.”
Add a Little extra fun
For the extra little details such as feet and ears, you can just use some paper (plain or construction) and some markers.
Felt would be a more durable option, and adding googly eyes is always fun.
Some Simple Yarn Craft Ideas for Kids
You can “paint” with yarn, weave, and lace – make bracelets, animals, pictures, and more!

Yarn Painting
Supplies:

- Yarn (I bought multi-color yarn and some solid, in different thicknesses, from the dollar store)
- Sticky paper (Self-adhesive paper known by different names such as adhesive shelf-lining or contact paper – I also bought this at the dollar store)
- Scissors
- Tape
- Hard surface (like a board or cardboard)
Instructions for Yarn Painting

Remove the backing, and tape the contact paper, sticky side up, to a firm surface.

Start playing! Just cut up strips of yarn, stick to the paper, and re-arrange as you like.
You can make designs and use different colors and thicknesses to fill in gaps.

Or you can create a picture, like this sailboat one.
